You are invited to take a leisurely stroll, soaking up the amazing historical architecture and natural beauty, enjoy art, unique honey products, delicious coffee stops, riverside lunches, pottery. Local gifts, including handmade chocolates, toys and linen; craft beer and gin, and fresh organic produce
Back Roads
Swellendam Municipality covers ar area of 3 835 square kilometers, and comprises of the towns of Swellendam, Buffeljagsrivier, Suurbraak and Barrydale, as well as the rural areas of Malagas, Infanta and Stormsvlei.
On this road trip, we visit 3 of these towns - Buffeljagsrivier, Suurbraak and Barrydale.
We start in Buffeljagsrivier for breakfast, and then do a game drive, where you are guaranteed to see giraffe, eland, sable and wildebeest.
Suurbraak (Xairu - Paradise) is our next stop - a village established in 1812, when the London Missionary Society established a mission station to serve the
Attaqua Khoikhoi.
Then its over the incredible 16 km Tradouw Pass, originally built by Thomas Bain between 1869 and 1873, through an altitude range of some 219 meters.
Our lunch stop is in the quaint town of Barrydale, on the edge of the Little Karoo.
This lovely village retains the timeless countryside charm where the heart of its people will welcome you.
